Norton Ghost Description Award-winning Norton Ghost is a program that allows you to make images of your hard drive, it functions as a backup utility. It has many features which include: • Backs up everything on your computer - digital music, photos, financial documents, applications, settings, operating system, etc. - in one easy step.
• Recovers your system and data even when you can't restart your operating system. • Makes incremental backups to maximize space and save time. • Makes backups on the fly, without restarting your system.
• Backs up to almost any media, including CDR/RW and DVD+-R/RW drives, USB and FireWire.
Do you really need to restore these images or just open them? I ask because there are free 'image explorers' that can open them for you to extract what you need out of them. If you need to restore the images it may be more difficult. Ghost32 is the windows version of the DOS based Ghost executable that uses.gho image files. I think it was available in the consumer version of Ghost 8.0. It's now only available with the enterprise versions of Ghost Solution Suite.
The trials used to contain fully working versions of Ghost 32 but I'm almost positive they stopped that. However, I'm pretty sure the trial contains a version called ghostoem32.exe That is ghost32 that can only restore images and will not create them. It's used by OEM's to distribute with images so they can be restored and not created. If you download the trail, look in the 'recovery kit' folder.pqi files are 'PowerQuest' image files.
Norton bought PowerQuest and used it's technology starting with the consumer version of Ghost 9. That's when they changed from the DOS based.gho images to the consumer based.v2i images. However, through Ghost 15 the consumer based versions of Ghost all continued to support.pqi images as well as.v2i images. You can restore the PowerQuest images with any Ghost recovery disk.
